香港六和开奖历史记录鈥檚 construction sector grew at one of the fastest clips in the nation over the last year, an industry association said, though the group warned that workers to fill open jobs will be sorely needed.

The 香港六和开奖历史记录 metro area added 9,100 construction jobs between December 2022 and December 2023, a growth rate of 18%, according to data released Wednesday by the Associated General Contractors of America. The organization said 58,300 people were working in construction in 香港六和开奖历史记录 as of December, up from 49,200 in the same month in 2022.

Only three of the 358 metro areas tracked by the organization added more jobs in that time frame: Dallas (12,300 jobs), Phoenix (10,400 jobs), and Riverside, California (10,000 jobs). 香港六和开奖历史记录 trailed only Sioux Falls, South Dakota (20%) and Tulsa, Oklahoma (19%) in growth rate.

The five other Louisiana metros the organization watches聽鈥 Houma-Thibodaux, Lafayette, Lake Charles, New Orleans and Shreveport-Bossier City 鈥 all posted gains as well. New Orleans added 1,000 jobs, a growth rate of 3%. Lafayette's 500-job gain represented a 5% climb, while Shreveport-Bossier also posted 5% growth with 400 new jobs.

Officials said the growth was spurred by massive investments in infrastructure projects, which had been put on the backburner for years. Federal packages such as the Inflation Reduction Act and the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act have unleashed billions of dollars in spending on energy and transportation work nationwide.

Across the U.S., the manufacturing sector is going through a construction boom, said Brian Turmail, national spokesman for the Associated General Contractors of America. Electric vehicle production is leading the way, along with semiconductor plants and data centers.

Reldon Owens, executive director of Louisiana Associated General Contractors, said his organization is anticipating growth in every construction sector 鈥渁t least for the next five or six years in Louisiana.鈥

鈥淭hink about all the local areas that are passing bonds, building new schools, road programs, etcetera,鈥 Owens said at a press conference Wednesday near Interstate 10 and City Park Lake to hype the 香港六和开奖历史记录 statistics and promote the industry. 鈥淲e鈥檙e just seeing a focus and an investment into infrastructure that we had not seen for several years.鈥

However, officials also highlighted an Associated General Contractors of America survey, released last year, that said 77% of construction firms can鈥檛 find qualified workers.

Those worries mirror concerns that state and local officials have expressed about finding personnel for a looming industrial construction boom. A Greater 香港六和开奖历史记录 Industry Alliance survey from 2023 said the region will need as many as 5,400 more industry workers in the next two years to meet demand.

Turmail said the 鈥渙nce robust vocational education system鈥 in the U.S. has been allowed to 鈥渆ssentially wither鈥 as high school students were steered toward four-year universities instead of two-year technical colleges.

鈥淭his growth is occurring at a time when many older workers are hanging up their tool belts and retiring to Florida and getting out of the industry and at a time when too few young people are considering careers in construction,鈥 Turmail said. 鈥淭hat鈥檚 pretty significant because workforce shortages have the potential to undermine growth and demand for construction projects by slowing schedules and ultimately raising the price of construction.鈥

To address the worker deficit, the Associated General Contractors of America has launched a digital advertising campaign called Construction is Essential to entice people into construction careers. It also started a retention program called Culture of Care to help employers build a company culture that is 鈥渨elcoming, safe and inclusive for an increasingly diverse and talented pool of workers,鈥 .

Turmail noted that construction jobs pay $35 an hour on average and don鈥檛 require a college degree that could saddle graduates with debt.

鈥淲hen you go to a construction project parking lot, all the nice pickup trucks you see, most of them are paid for,鈥 he joked. 鈥淭hat鈥檚 a difference for our industry.鈥

Shane Kirkpatrick, president of GROUP Contractors in 香港六和开奖历史记录 and president of the Louisiana Associated General Contractors board, said the trade organization is reaching out to local school districts to promote construction careers to K-12 students.

Kirkpatrick said the biggest challenge to recruiting more workers is 鈥渃hanging the mindset鈥 on the viability of a construction career. He said that, before middle school, most parents are asking their children what university they want to attend, not what career they want to pursue.

鈥淭hat鈥檚 what every parent says,鈥 Kirkpatrick said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 not, 鈥榃hat trade are you going to do? Are you going to be a carpenter, a welder?鈥 It鈥檚, 鈥榃hat college are you going to go to?鈥 鈥 even though there are so many college graduates that come out and are unemployed or they鈥檙e not gainfully employed.鈥
